When I think of July the 4th, I think of the lives of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Two men who met at the continental congress and worked to draft the Declaration of Independence. Both risked their lives, their fortunes and the sacred honor to help create the United States. Both went on to follow George Washington as President of the United States only to see their friendship end as each became prominent in different political parties. Later in life they reconciled and produced years or written correspondence like no other. Adams, the elder of the two lived to be nearly 91 while Jefferson survived into his 80's. During thier final year both grew very ill and weak. Jefferson died on the morning of July 4,1826 at home in Virginia. Adams died later on the same day just outside of Boston. His last words were "Jefferson still lives!" Many saw this as a message from the almighty. I see it as proof that we are guided by a sense of purpose in life. both men willed themselves to live to see the 50th anniversary of the country many said would not survive.
Today I'm concerned at how much we seem to be divided in to "tribes". We are not a nation in the historic sense. We are not derived from an ancient bloodline. We do not represent a single nationality. We do not have a homeland but a country based on unlimited possibilites where people from around the world could become Americans. I hope that, in spite of our deep divisions, this idea will not perish from the earth. Independence forever!
